This is the document your committee assesses. Four to ten weeks is normal, including your guide's revisions. Longer is common and is not a failure.
Before writing anything, confirm the structure your department requires. Using another university's format gets a synopsis returned before it is read. Template below.
What the format requires
Format is the cheapest thing to get wrong at this stage, and the most avoidable.
| Word or page limit | confirming with the university — ask your department meanwhile |
|---|---|
| Paper size and margins | confirming with the university — ask your department meanwhile |
| Font and spacing | confirming with the university — ask your department meanwhile |
| Citation style | confirming with the university — and it may vary by faculty |

| Guide's certificate | confirming with the university — ask your department meanwhile |
Why these are blank: we publish a figure only once someone here has read the current ordinance and confirmed it. A wrong number here costs you a resubmission.
Need the number today? Send us your department and we will find the clause and come back to you — usually the same working day. If you already have the ordinance, send that and we will verify and publish it here, credited to you.
Ask for the clauseThe synopsis proforma, section by section
Eleven sections, in the order most Indian universities prescribe. Open any one for what it must establish, what to include, and the mistake that most often costs a resubmission.
Confirm the section order and word limits against your own department's format — those differ, and using another institution's structure gets a synopsis returned before the content is read.
Standard synopsis structure
typically 3,000–5,000 words · 20–30 pages01Title page1 page
Prescribed by your department — title, your name, guide's name, department, university, and the month and year. It is the first thing a committee looks at and the easiest thing to get wrong.
- Title names your variables and your population
- Guide's name and designation exactly as the department records them
- Month and year of submission, not of writing
02Introduction and background400–600 words
Establishes that the area matters. Short. The committee is not assessing your reading here — they are checking that you can state a problem clearly.
- Opens with the problem, not with a dictionary definition
- Establishes practical or theoretical significance in a few sentences
- Narrows from the broad area to your specific question
03Review of literature800–1,200 words
This is the section that most often sinks a synopsis. A review that summarises studies does not establish a gap. A review that shows where the literature disagrees, or where it stops, does.
- Organised by theme or by argument, never by author or by date
- Shows disagreement and unresolved questions, not just findings
- Recent work included — a review with nothing after 2018 reads as stale
- Every claim cited; every citation in the reference list
04Research gap and rationale150–250 words
Three sentences, expanded. What is known. What is not known. Why the difference matters to someone. If you cannot write those three sentences, the synopsis is premature.
- States plainly what has not been studied
- Explains why that absence matters, and to whom
- Follows logically from the review above it, not from a new argument
05Objectives4–6 objectives
Each objective must be answerable by something you will actually measure. If you cannot name the data that would answer it, it is not an objective.
- Begins with a verb: to examine, to determine, to compare, to assess
- One idea per objective
- Each maps to a hypothesis and to an analysis you can name
06Hypothesesmatched to objectives
Directional, testable, falsifiable, and matched to a statistical test you can name. State the null where your department requires it.
- Directional where theory supports a direction
- Variables named exactly as they appear in your instrument
- One relationship per hypothesis
- A named test for each: t-test, ANOVA, regression, SEM path
07Research methodology600–900 words
The chain: question → variables → data needed → analysis that answers it. Any break shows up here cheaply, or at analysis stage expensively.
- Research design named and justified, not just stated
- Population and sampling frame defined
- Sample size with the calculation shown, not asserted
- Instrument named — validated scale with citation, or your own with a pilot plan
- Analysis techniques named, and matched to your hypotheses
08Scope and limitations200–300 words
What the study covers and what it does not. Stating limitations honestly strengthens a synopsis — it shows you understand your own design.
- Geographic, temporal and conceptual boundaries stated
- Limitations that follow from your design, not generic ones
- No apology — a limitation is a boundary, not a failure
09Expected outcome and contribution200–300 words
What the study will add, stated modestly and specifically. Modest and specific beats ambitious and vague.
- Theoretical contribution stated separately from practical
- Claims proportionate to the design — a survey of 300 does not transform a field
- Named beneficiaries: which practitioners, which policy, which literature
10Chapter plan1 page
The proposed chapter structure with a line on what each will contain. Some departments require it, most expect it.
- Five to seven chapters, conventionally structured
- One or two sentences per chapter
- Consistent with the methodology you proposed
11Referencesas per prescribed style
In the style your department requires, applied consistently throughout. An inconsistent reference list is the most visible sign of hurried work.
- Every in-text citation appears in the list, and vice versa
- One style throughout — APA, MLA or as prescribed
- Recent sources present
- DOIs included where they exist
What goes in each section
Section order is prescribed and should be confirmed against your department's format. What each section is for does not change, and that is where synopses are usually won or lost.
Introduction and background
Establishes that the area matters. Short. The committee is not assessing your reading here; they are checking that you can state a problem.
Review of literature

Research gap and rationale
Three sentences: what is known, what is not, why the difference matters to someone. If you cannot write those three sentences, the synopsis is premature.
Objectives and hypotheses
Each objective must be answerable by something you will actually measure. Each hypothesis must be directional, testable and matched to a statistical test you can name.
Methodology
The chain: question → variables → data needed → analysis that answers it. Any break shows up here, cheaply, rather than at S10 expensively.
Expected outcome and references
Modest and specific beats ambitious and vague. References in the required style, consistently.
Why synopses come back
If yours was returned, this is ordinary
Most scholars experience it at least once, and it is not a judgement on your ability. From the cases we have handled, returns trace to one of four things, in this order:
- The gap was not defensible. The committee could see what was interesting, not what was missing. Sends you back to S3 — the literature, not the synopsis.
- The format did not match. Returned before the content was read. Days to fix.
- The method could not answer the question. A break between what you asked and what you proposed to measure.
- Feasibility. The committee did not believe the data was obtainable in the time available.
Was yours returned and you cannot tell which of these it was? Send the committee's comments and we will tell you which one it is, and whether it is a days fix or a months fix. No charge for that answer.

If you would rather have it reviewed first
Everything on this page stays free. If you want the synopsis checked against this university's format and the four failure modes above before it goes to the committee, that is a service — quoted on scope, and we will point you to the free option if that solves it.
